The key to finding the right job…

Recently, as I was scanning my LinkedIn news feed, a Simon Sinek TED Talk popped up – chances are you have heard about him recently. According to Simon’s book, “Start with Why”, most companies don’t understand how customers choose their products. However, if the customer approach is driven by 3 questions; Why? How? And What? – Businesses can become extremely successful; Simon calls this concept “The Golden Circle”.

You can also apply this theory to your personal life and job search in order to find the right career path.  If you’re going to put time and energy into finding a new challenge, you need to find something that motivates you and where you can make a real impact. It’s not about finding a job, it’s about finding the right job, which gives you the opportunity to progress and get you where you want to be.

Everybody knows “what” they do. Some know “how” they do it. But very few people know “WHY” they do it, so let’s begin exploring your own Golden Circle by questioning yourself with the following:

WHY? Very few people can really explain why they do what they do and what inspires them or brings them fulfilment.  Why do you want a new job? Why do you want the particular job you are seeking? You may need to dig deeper to determine why you are unhappy in your current position and find your motivation.

HOW? Once we have clarified the why, this should motivate you to explore which actions to take or which principles to follow to make sure you find the right role for you. ‘How’ is ultimately creating a plan to make sure all your reasons ‘why’ you want to leave or find a new job are covered – look at the current platforms and contacts you have available to start the job search!

WHAT? This is the result of putting ‘why’ and ‘how’ into action, this is a tangible representation of what you believe – your career and the direction your position looks like. What kind of work are you looking for? What do you enjoy doing? What company do you want to work for? Again – you need to believe in what you are going to do so you can be happy and successful!

“When our Why is clear, when we are disciplined in How we pursue it and when What we do is consistent, the outside world understands our Why as clearly as we do. And when that happens, more and more people are inspired to follow. And that is when you know you are a leader” – Simon Sinek.

Now you have completed the Golden Circle, go for it!
